It measures the absolute pressure inside the intake manifold and provides the engine control unit (ECU) with valuable information about the engine load. Here's how a MAP sensor works:
Sensor Construction: A typical MAP sensor consists of a housing that contains a sensing element, such as a diaphragm or a semiconductor device, and an electronic circuit. The sensing element is designed to respond to changes in pressure, and the electronic circuit converts the pressure readings into an electrical signal.
Pressure Sensing: The MAP sensor is usually connected to the intake manifold through a vacuum line. This allows it to measure the absolute pressure inside the manifold, which includes both atmospheric pressure and the pressure generated by the engine's intake stroke. The sensor detects the pressure changes and converts them into an electrical signal.
Electrical Signal: As the pressure inside the intake manifold changes, the sensing element of the MAP sensor deforms or alters its electrical properties. This change is detected by the electronic circuit, which converts it into a voltage or frequency signal proportional to the pressure reading.
